Is there anything better than a freshly sharpened #2 pencil? Today we are using my favorite school supply to make a #2 pencil picture frame that can proudly display those first day of school pictures.
This back to school craft is great for kids of all ages and would make a fun first day of school craft to take home memories of a successful first day of class.
We sharpened pencils to different lengths to go around the frame. We did this with 5 layers of pencils on each side, but if you were doing this with a group of kids and didn’t have all the time in the world to sharpen pencils, one or two layers could work as well!

#2 Pencil Frame for Back to School Pictures Craft
Supplies Needed
- 4×6 wooden picture frame
- Acrylic paint (we used a golden yellow)
- Wood glue
- Sponge brush
- 20 pencils
- Pencil sharpener
- (optional) Craft sealer/decoupage like mod podge
Directions
Step 1
Paint your frame a solid color using the acrylic paint.
Allow to dry completely.
Step 2
Use the pencil sharpener to sharpen the pencils to the right length.
You’ll want 2 pencils in every length, descending in length to reach the inside of the frame.
Each side of the frame will have 5 pencils in place.
Step 3
Spread the wood glue onto each side of the frame and place the pencils in the correct position.
Allow to dry completely. The wood glue should dry clear.
Step 4
Use the sponge brush to coat the pencils in the decoupage sealer.
Make sure to get the ends of the pencils completely coated so that they won’t mark once the seal has set.
Allow to dry overnight.
Step 5
Add your first day of school photo!
Step 6
Find the perfect place at home to display your #2 pencil frame craft for others to see.
