The brain is like a muscle – Carl Sagan, Scientist.
Children’s brains grow and develop so quickly. One of our favorite “brain building activities” are playing with a variety of sensory items, mixing soft, and scratchy or squishy and rough. Sometimes the most simple activities can be the ones that the kids enjoy doing the most!
This week’s It’s Playtime (our weekly kids meme) features sensory play activities that were linked up last week. Thanks to everyone who participated! We had over 200 blog posts linked up – so many great posts to choose from!

Your kids can enjoy playdough with a mix of objects. I love how Daisy Chains added balls, feathers and glitter to their blue playdough fun.
.
Another squishy activity, and one that is mess-free was shared by Didi. She added gel to a ziplock bag, dripped a couple drops of food coloring in the bag and her kids had fun squishing as they mixed the colors.
.
Pasta. It is something we eat a lot of, but not something I often let the kids play with. Ellie at Create with our Hands had fun with her tot as they scooped pasta. I bet it sounded fun as the pieces dropped in the pots.
.
Paint on the Ceiling is a fun blog with lots of activities. She inspired two of our features. My kids are dreaming of summer and filling water balloons. I like how they popped tiny holes into the balloons and played in the spray. She also created a hanging toy collection full of a variety of textures for her baby to enjoy.
.
Sand is another sensory activity that has many uses. Mummy’s Musings had fun sifting and mixing sand colors.
