Easy Pumpkin Pie Play Dough

This fun fall play dough recipe is the best way to keep your little one busy during a chilly autumn afternoon! We usually make a batch of this during a baking weekend in the fall. It’s a great way to keep my kiddo busy while pumpkin pie, pumpkin bars, apple crisp dump cake, or any of our other favorite fall treats bake away in the oven.
Not only is play dough play fun and educational, it’s also a great way to bond with your kids! While you work on putting your pumpkin pie together, your child can mirror your actions, while making their own pumpkin pie out of Pumpkin Pie Play Dough!
Supplies needed to make Pumpkin Pie Play Dough:
- 15 oz. can of pumpkin
- 3 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice (or make your own with this recipe from The Nerd’s Wife!)
- 2-3 cups corn starch
How to Make Pumpkin Pie Play Dough
Mix together the canned pumpkin and the pumpkin pie spice. Slowly add the corn starch, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
The amount of corn starch that you need will vary depending on the canned pumpkin you use. Different brands have different moisture contents — the can we used took 2 1/2 cups.
Once the dough reaches the desired consistency, knead it with your hands.
Now you’re ready to play!
Is Pumpkin Pie Play Dough Gluten Free?
If you have a kiddo with a gluten sensitivity or gluten allergy, you probably already know that most of the commercial play dough has wheat in it. The good news is that it’s so easy (and cheap!) to make your own!
As long as you use gluten free corn starch, this pumpkin pie play dough is indeed gluten free!
Fun with Play Dough
This pumpkin pie play dough is moist and smushy — it’s the perfect fall sensory activity! We played with our batch in pie pans with leaf dough stamps. My son loves getting to make his own version of pumpkin pie!
You could even add it to a fall sensory bin. The texture would be really fun to explore with colored rice.
